My trip to Lanzarote
Let's start the story of my trip to Lanzarote !
To give you a little context, I left at the end of August-beginning of September with my boyfriend for a week's vacation. Our aim was to visit but also to relax. Here's how our stay went.
Where to stay in Lanzarote ?
I'd recommend the southwest coast of the island, which I think is the best location for accessing all the activities. We stayed at the hotel Secrets Lanzarote Ressort & Spa. It's a little pricey, but the location is ideal. What's more, you'll have access to a wide range of in-house activities.
How do I get around Lanzarote?
A car is essential for getting around the island. I recommend the agency TopCar, which requires no deposit if you take out Super Insurance. On top of that, being 22 and 23 years old, most car rental agencies ask you to pay a “young driver” supplement (often at a very high price), and sometimes some agencies refuse to rent their cars to young drivers. However, there are a number of reasons for this, TopCar accept young drivers ( with a small supplement) and they ask that they take out Super Insurance (which costs around 30 euros more than the basic price, so it's very affordable).
Where to eat in Lanzarote ?
Day 1
We boarded the plane around 12pm at the airport from Geneva and arrived on the island around 4pm. We picked up our rental car at the agency TopCar ( see here : https://top-car-hire.com/fr ) which I highly recommend. Being a young driver (I was 22 at the time of booking), most agencies don't allow us to rent cars. With TopCarIf you're a young driver, you'll have to pay a young-driver supplement and take out full insurance (Super Assurance), which will allow you to drive as a young driver (a full driving license is required). We only paid 230 euros for one week.
After having recuperated the car,we headed for our hotel, Secrets Lanzarote Ressort & Spa, which we had booked on Booking.com. We headed for this hotel for its excellent location and of course for its Spa, because as I said, we were also here to relax. We had the breakfast package included. We were made to feel very welcome in the hotel.
Day 2
The next morning we set off on an adventure with our little Mitsubi to discover the island. The further we drove, the more breathtaking the scenery became. It's incredible the diversity of landscapes this island has to offer. We decided to make a stop along the way, somewhat by chance. As it turned out, we stopped at El Cuervo (Caldera de Los Cuervos), an inactive volcano, around which we wandered for around 1h30. We even went inside the crater to admire the beauty of the place.
After this pleasant stroll, we headed off in the direction of the beach Papagayo. A little before arriving, the road to the site is not in very good condition, but any car can access it. We had to pay 3 euros (the price for the car) to use the road leading to the beach.
When we arrived at the parking lot, we noticed that there were several ways of getting to the seafront. We decided to go on the beach of Cera (Playa de la Cera), which was the least crowded at the time. The beach of Papagayowas full by this time (as it's a well-known little cove). We enjoyed the beach, then headed back up, as we were starting to get hungry. We ate at a restaurant at the top of the beach at Papagayobut honestly, this one was way too expensive and the food wasn't great.
On the way back to the hotel, we stopped at The Geria, which is a wine cave We tasted several wines, but the one I'd recommend you try is the sweet wine typical of the area.
For the evening meal, we decided to take the car and drive to the small town of Puerto Del Carmenjust 10 minutes from our hotel. This rather large city is very touristy. Honestly, we didn't really like it. However, we did eat at a very good seaside restaurant (which makes very good sangria). The name of this restaurant is Long Beach Club.
Day 3
After a good breakfast at the hotel, we set off in the direction of Los Hervideros, which is a volcanic coastline renowned for its beauty and the waves that break over the sea caves. Clearly a must-see.
After enjoying the beauty of Los Hervideros, we took the road to go to Charco Verde, probably the most popular tourist attraction on Lanzarote. I had high expectations of Charco Verde, because it was certainly the landscape I most wanted to see on the island. When I got there, I was stunned by the color of the lagoon in Charco Verde. The magnificent contrast between the green lagoon and the black sand is unique.
After all these visits, we needed a rest, so we took the car to go to Los in Los Charconesnatural pools created in volcanic rock. After about a 30-minute drive, we arrived at a parking lot that was deserted (here's the address we put up on the internet: 35570, Las Palmas, Spain) We felt like we were alone in the world. We weren't sure where to find the pools in Los Angeles. in Los CharconesSo we headed for the sea. After about a 40-minute walk, we spotted a swimming pool in the distance. So we climbed up the rocks to get closer (I recommend you bring sneakers). When we arrived, we relaxed and took a dip. There are several pools in Los Charcones, some of them are more difficult to access.
For our evening, we returned to the town of Puerto Del Carmen (we gave this very touristy town a second chance). We decided to go to Lani’sRestaurant, which was delicious. Before returning to the hotel, we enjoyed our evening and went back to the Long Beach Club, which I recommend for partying.
Day 4
A very quiet day, during which we went north of the island to the beach of Famara. This beach stretches over 5km and is perfect if you like surfing! We swam in the big waves and enjoyed the sunshine. After a good bath, we went by chance a restaurant at the top of the beach in which we decided to go to. This restaurant was wonderful ( Dunas restaurant). Then we took advantage of the afternoon and evening to relax.
Day 5
Departure around 9 a.m. to go to the Mirador del Rio which is at the very north of the island. Entrance costs 8 euros per person. You'll have a breathtaking view over the island of Graciosa, located in the north-west of Lanzarote. After admiring the panorama from the Mirador del Rio, we decided to go to the beach Caleton Blanco. This beach is famous for the tides. I recommend that you take a walk there, where you can enjoy the sand and the magnificent color of the water. It's a very quiet beach, protected by the rocks. For the evening, we we went a second time to Playa Famara from which you can enjoy a wonderful sunset.
Day 6
After spending the morning inour hotel, we went straight towards Timanfaya Park .This is the volcanos Park on the island of Lanzarote. Admission is 20 euros per person. Honestly, we were disappointed with this park. We arrived around 2pm and there was a queue of about 1h30. What's special is that you queue in your car, and nobody explains anything to you. Once we finally had access to the park, we were asked to get out of our car and park it in the parking lot next to the El Diablo restaurant. Once again, the information was unclear. We understood that we were in fact to board a bus that would take us on a tour of Volcano Park. Even then we were disappointed, as we would have preferred to be able to enjoy the scenery without having limited time. As it was, we found ourselves on a bus full of tourists, touring the park in less than 45 minutes. Despite these inconveniences, the scenery is breathtaking. After touring the park by bus, we decided to try the restaurant El Diablo which uses the heat of the volcano to cook its food. Once again, the restaurant is very touristy and prices are quite high. Despite this, the food is good. We then finished our day in our hotel.
Day 7
On our last day in Lanzarote, we took a magnificent hike to the north-west of the island. During our visit to Mirador Del Rio a few days before, we had spotted a deserted beach in the distance. After a bit of research, we found a hike to take us there (here's the link to the hike https://www.komoot.com/tour/1837064671?ref=its&share_token=aG4aSG5XJ3X0xY0hqr6SlLXkwtS13izHvcklybKzqcEGkZOv6o ). This hike is about 3 hours and take you to El Risco Beach . This beach is very seldom visited, as it is only accessible by hiking. It's an intermediate level hike, so I recommend you have a good level of fitness to do it. After descending the entire cliff, we arrived at this magnificent beach, which was deserted. It was honestly one of our best vacation memories. We were able to enjoy our swim while being careful, as there are some big waves. We were completely alone. The return journey was a little more difficult, as this time we had to climb the cliff with 500 metres of ascent. Finally, after returning to the hotel, we enjoyed our last evening on the island.
Here's the story of our wonderful trip to Lanzarote. It's definitely a destination I'd recommend for those in search of adventure! So don't hesitate any longer, book your next trip!
